Accra's heat and humidity can be tough on dogs, especially short-nosed and thick-coated breeds. Walk during the cooler parts of the day — early morning or after sunset — and avoid the midday sun whenever possible.
Always keep fresh water available, and never leave a dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes. Cars heat up quickly and can be fatal.
Watch for signs of heat stress: excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy. If you notice these, move your dog to shade, offer water, and cool them gradually with a damp towel — never ice-cold water, which can cause shock.
Regular grooming also matters. A well-maintained coat actually helps regulate temperature better than shaving it down completely.
